C R E A T I O N– As Explained in the Catholic Catechism

Ah, I love the story of creation. It's mind-boggling, something man will always think and wonder about. Thankfully, it's not a complete mystery (that is if you're a bible-believer). But it's so so beautiful, the mastery of detail, the harmony, creation of science, and purpose and origin of human life. Thinking of the creation of the universe puts my mind in the starry outer space.
Some aspects of the creation story given in Genesis have been debated in the past Century.  While details such as how long it took for the universe’s creation, or what fruit was on the Tree of Evil is not official doctrine, there are many things about creation that the Church teaches as true doctrine.    The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that God, who always was, freely created the universe of love and goodness.  All things were created good, but created beings were given free will to turn away from goodness.  Angels were created as spirits to be messengers and servants of God and to guide and protect human beings, but some chose to not follow their Creator.  God created the universe for His glory through Christ the Son. All three Persons of the Trinity took part in the Creator’s plan. The seven days of creation shows the hierarchy of being, which are all interdependent.
The “Catechesis of Creation” (CCC 282) tells us about the foundation of mankind, and of Christianity.  As revealed in the book of Genesis, creation can answer some of the big questions that we may have about our origin: the who, what, when, where, and why questions.  Because God created us out of love to be in union with Him, “creation is revealed as the first step towards this covenant.”(CCC 288)
In line with this, “creation is the common work of the Holy Trinity.  For although the Son had not yet come down to Earth, both the Son and the Holy Spirit work in “creative cooperation with the Father as His hands in the making of Creation.”(CCC 292)  God, as one Being, did this with His own Wisdom.
One answer to the “why” question of the reason for God’s creation, is that all was created with the purpose of glorifying the Creator.   Not because God needs more glory, but for it to be shared with His creatures (CCC 293): “The glory of God consists in the realization of this manifestation and communication of his goodness, for which the world was created.” (CCC 294)  How beautiful is it that Being itself should share His glory?
Completely out of God's supreme goodness, “God creates freely ‘out of nothing’."(296)  Nothing needed to pre-exist for God to create, as He created all things “ex nihilo.” And God did not need creation, because “God is infinitely greater than all his works.”   “[God,] at every moment, upholds and sustains them in being” (301) and without this, everything created would fail to exist.
God’s plan for the universe wasn’t made perfect at once.  “The universe was created ‘in a state of journeying’ (in statu viae),”(302)  and in this way, God brings about His divine providence.  Divine Providence, as the Catechism puts it, is “the dispositions by which God guides his creation toward [His plan of] perfection.”(CCC 302)

In God’s plan “to carry it out he also makes use of his creatures' cooperation.”(CCC 306)  This is not by any means a sign of weakness, but rather the opposite.  God is so mighty that He can, and desires to share and entrust power to us as a gift.  However, as fallen humans with a free will, we can abuse this power and let evil come into the world.  God all-knowing, of course, could foresee this. This is why we need the gifts of God and how we live in cooperation with him.

We, as human beings, are given so much power and dignity as God’s top creation in the hierarchy of beings (creatures). “The hierarchy of creatures is expressed by the order of the ‘six days’, from the less perfect to the more perfect.”(CCC 342)   The sixth day of creation is the day God worked up to create His masterpiece.. us!  The order in which we were created says so much about who we are. Humans were created with priceless dignity in God’s image and likeness, in that we share in his power and goodness.  The bodies God molded for us reflect His nature and beauty (on a smaller scale and analogous sense). The more perfect we become, the more like God we become, and the more we glorify God with our humanity.
To condense all this, “God willed the diversity of his creatures and their own particular goodness, their interdependence, and their order. He destined all material creatures for the good of the human race. Man, and through him, all creation is destined for the glory of God.” (353)
Creation comes together as a work of the Holy Trinity.  Although a mystery of Faith, God has, nevertheless, revealed to us through Sacred Scripture those truths necessary for our salvation.  The Holy Trinity is revealed throughout time, just as the universe was created in six days as part of God’s divine providence.  After Adam's Fall, and through God’s ultimate plan in divine providence, the second Person of the Trinity, was sent to dwell among us, be crucified and rise again for our salvation.  This was God’s ultimate gift for us. With Christ as Divine Providence, “Jesus asks for childlike abandonment to the providence of our heavenly Father who takes care of his children's smallest needs.” (CCC 305)  With God as our creator and Father, we are His children, and we need only to give our lives back to Him.

  1. Beautiful. We are created to ultimately be with God in perfect joy. Everything we do now will either bring us closer to God (if we choose to follow Him) or will separate us from Him ( if we choose to follow our own desires.)
I am glad you are taking Religion classes, they are actually the most important ones. Prayer and receiving sacraments are critical as well!!
